Complete Stone House Repointing & Stone Step Construction

This project focused on the complete repointing of the stone masonry across the house, including the walls and foundations. The work also included improvements to water drainage around the building and the construction of new stone entrance steps designed to sit naturally alongside the existing masonry.

The Challenge

The mortar joints across the building had deteriorated and required renewal to maintain the stone masonry in good condition. At the same time, water around the building needed to be managed more effectively, while the entrance required new steps that would fit naturally with the character of the existing stonework.

Our Approach

Deteriorated mortar was removed from the joints across all stone walls and foundations before the masonry was thoroughly repointed with lime mortar. Drainage pipes were installed around the building, and a rainwater drainage system was added to improve water management. At the entrance, new stone steps were built using carefully selected stone to complement the existing masonry.

The Outcome

The completed repointing gives the masonry renewed protection while retaining the natural irregularity of the stone walls. Improved drainage helps manage water around the building, and the new entrance steps have been integrated as a practical addition that sits comfortably alongside the existing stonework.

The completed masonry after repointing across all exterior stone walls and foundations. The renewed lime mortar joints provide consistent support throughout the stonework while preserving the natural variation, irregular joint lines and individual character of the existing masonry.

The new entrance steps were built from carefully selected stone to complement the existing masonry of the house. Their proportions, stone selection and deliberately irregular appearance allow a completely new and practical element to sit naturally alongside the older stonework.

In traditional stone masonry, sound mortar joints help support the individual stones while limiting the amount of water that can penetrate deeper into the wall. Combined with effective drainage around the building, timely repointing helps protect the masonry and reduce the need for more extensive repairs in the future.
