Stone Basement Entrance Reconstruction & Brick Vault Restoration

This project involved the extensive reconstruction of a damaged stone basement entrance and the restoration of the large vaulted cellar behind it. The original entrance vault had completely collapsed, while several later alterations had changed the character and proportions of the structure.

The Challenge

The basement entrance was in very poor condition. Its original vault had completely collapsed, the stone entrance walls had been altered, and the opening leading into the main cellar had been partially blocked to reduce its size. The original stone steps had also been removed and replaced with concrete stairs.

Inside the cellar, the large existing vault and surrounding masonry required extensive repointing and repair.

Our Approach

The work began by clearing the collapsed material and carefully removing later alterations that were not part of the original construction.

The stone entrance walls were stabilised and repointed, and a new brick vault was built above the entrance. The entrance façade was reconstructed using stone previously used within the structure, while new stone steps replaced the later concrete staircase.

A particularly meaningful detail was incorporated into the new stone entrance arch. A stone bearing a carved family memorial mark was found on the property. It was carefully shaped to the required form and used as the central stone of the new entrance façade.

Inside the cellar, the large vault was fully repointed, the walls received new lime plaster, and new timber entrance doors were made to complete the work.

Traditional lime mortar was used throughout the masonry works.

The Outcome

The completed work restored a coherent entrance to the cellar while retaining materials and details connected to the property itself. The reconstructed brick vault, stone façade and new stone steps now form a natural transition into the large vaulted cellar.

Reusing existing stone — particularly the carved family memorial stone as the central element of the entrance arch — also allowed an important part of the property's history to remain visible within the renewed structure.

The Basement Before Reconstruction

The basement entrance before work began. The original entrance vault had completely collapsed, while later alterations in brick, concrete and other materials had changed the structure considerably. Before reconstruction could begin, these additions and the accumulated debris had to be carefully removed to reveal what remained of the original construction.

A Closer Look at the Collapsed Entrance

A closer view shows the extent of the damage and later alterations. The original stone steps had been replaced with concrete, the entrance walls had been modified, and the opening into the main cellar had been reduced. The first task was to clear the area and carefully dismantle these non-original additions.

Exposing the Original Cellar Vault

With the later alterations and covering material removed, the original brick cellar vault is revealed. The exposed structure will now be carefully cleaned and washed before its condition is assessed in detail. Any damaged or weakened areas can then be identified and repaired where necessary, while preserving the sound original masonry.

Protecting the Exposed Vault

With the original cellar vault exposed and cleaned, it is temporarily covered to protect the masonry from rain and changing weather conditions during the work. At the same time, the later reduced entrance has been carefully dismantled, reopening the passage to its original dimensions and preparing it for reconstruction.

The Original Entrance Reopened

Viewed from inside the cellar, the entrance has now been cleared of the later masonry that had reduced its original size. Reopening the full passage restores the original proportions of the connection between the entrance and the main vaulted cellar, providing the basis for the next stage of reconstruction.

Assessing the Main Cellar Vault

Before restoration, the interior of the main cellar vault shows areas of deteriorated and missing plaster as well as local damage to the masonry. The timber support visible in the photograph temporarily stabilises a damaged section of the vault, allowing the affected area to be safely assessed and repaired before the remaining restoration work continues.

Building the New Entrance Arch

Found on the property itself, this distinctive stone became an important part of the reconstructed entrance and its connection to the property’s history.

A Stone with a Family History

A particularly meaningful element of the project was this stone, found on the property and bearing a carved family memorial mark. The stone was carefully shaped to suit its new structural position and incorporated into the centre of the entrance arch, preserving a small but personal connection between the renewed cellar and its past.

The Completed Cellar Entrance

The completed entrance brings together the reconstructed brick vault, stabilised stone walls, new stone steps and entrance façade, all built and finished using traditional lime mortar. The following views show the finished work from inside the entrance and towards the main cellar, including the masonry details and transitions between the renewed elements.

Heritage Conservation Insight

Working with an old stone structure does not always mean returning every element to exactly what was there before. The important part is understanding what can be preserved, what needs to be repaired and what must be rebuilt.

In this project, the original stone masonry and main cellar vault were retained and repaired wherever possible, while the collapsed entrance required a new brick vault and reconstructed stone façade. Original materials found on the property were also given a new purpose, including the carved stone used as the keystone and old timber reused for the cellar doors.

This balance between preservation, repair and carefully considered new work allows an old structure to remain authentic while continuing to serve a useful purpose.
