Stone Foundation Renovation
This former stone stable was being prepared for conversion into a residential building. One end of the structure had partially collapsed, while the remaining masonry also required extensive repair. Before the building could enter its next stage of use, the foundations needed to be exposed and strengthened and the damaged stonework brought back into sound condition.
The Challenge
The building had originally served as a stable and was now expected to support a very different future use. One end had suffered a substantial collapse, while deteriorated mortar joints and local masonry damage were present across the remaining walls. The existing stone foundations also needed to be fully exposed in preparation for structural strengthening.
Our Approach
The stone foundations were completely excavated and exposed, allowing their condition to be assessed and preparing them for the planned concrete strengthening works, which were subsequently carried out by another contractor.
Once the foundation strengthening was complete, we returned to the masonry. The collapsed section of the building was rebuilt in stone, while the remaining walls were repaired and repointed where necessary, restoring sound masonry throughout the structure before the next stage of the building conversion.
The Outcome
The former stable was left with strengthened foundations and repaired stone masonry ready for the next stage of its conversion. The collapsed section had been rebuilt, while repairs and repointing across the remaining walls restored the continuity and structural condition of the original stone shell.


The Former Stone Stable Before Renovation
The former stone stable before work began, with one end of the building partially collapsed and the remaining masonry showing signs of deterioration. Before its planned conversion into a residential building could progress, the foundations and surviving stone structure first required substantial attention.


Preparing the Site for Foundation Work
With the collapsed stone and debris removed, the area was cleared and prepared for excavation down to foundation level. As work began in early spring, with freezing conditions and even occasional morning snow, the open end of the building and working area were temporarily enclosed with protective sheeting and heated with a diesel heater. This created a more controlled working environment and allowed the masonry work to continue despite the cold conditions outside.


Stone Foundations Fully Exposed
The stone foundations have been fully excavated and carefully cleared of soil and loose material, exposing the existing masonry down to its base. This prepared the structure for the concrete foundation strengthening specified by the client and architect as part of the wider conversion project. While this is not the approach we would typically recommend for traditional stone foundations, our work focused on carefully preparing and preserving the existing masonry for the next stage.



Rebuilding the Collapsed Stone Wall
Following the foundation strengthening, the previously collapsed end of the building was rebuilt in stone. As the conversion design called for part of the missing wall to be replaced with glazing, the stonework was rebuilt up to the dimensions of the planned opening, leaving it ready for the future installation of the glazed element.

The Completed Stone Masonry
The stonework after completion of our part of the project. The existing walls have been repaired and repointed, missing sections rebuilt, and the previously collapsed end reconstructed in preparation for the planned glazing. By this stage, the wider conversion of the former stable into a residential building had also progressed considerably.


Heritage Conservation Insight
Adapting an old stone building to a new use often requires traditional masonry to work alongside modern structural and architectural solutions. The important task is to understand which parts of the existing structure can be retained, repair what remains sound and rebuild only where necessary, while preparing the masonry carefully for the next stages of the project.
